Inola takes its name from the Cherokee word for “black fox.” This is one of the few areas of Oklahoma where the horse-drawn wagons and buggies of Amish farmers can still be seen.  The first Post Office was in 1890,  the same year the railroad was completed from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Coffeyville, Kansas. The Inola Depot was established Feb 6, 1897.
